Is your organization purpose-oriented? Check it out (excerpt)

Before you read the excerpt below about some of the key features of Purpose-oriented organizations and whether your organization is purpose-oriented, I encourage you to quickly read the following excerpts concerning discovering and pursuing your purpose from my new book entitled ‘The Highest Level of Greatness’.
1. What I found out in my conversations concerning purpose
2. The four grand truth about purpose
3. My conversation with Ken about purpose-oriented lifestyle
4. About my little life and the path I have followed in the discovery and pursuit of my purpose

III. Purpose-oriented organization
An organization is purpose-oriented when:
• The founders/leaders know their individual purpose.
• The organization has a unique purpose/mission.
• The organization’s motive for its formation is not just making profits, rather, a very strong cause bigger than just making money.
• It hires key team members who share its purpose and promote to key leadership positions those who are loyal to the mission.
• The organization’s brand directly reflects the mission of the organization.
• The organization’s culture serves its purpose.
• Key stakeholders, partners, and alliances commonly share the purpose of the organization.
• The main thing of the organization directly contributes toward the advancement of the mission of the organization.
• All portfolios, programs, and projects directly contribute toward the fulfillment of the mission get top priority in terms of time and resources.

All those who attained purpose-oriented greatness either formed an organization (association, business, team, etc.) or joined a purpose-oriented organization. Either way, the organization was solely dedicated to the realization of its unique mission. It had purpose-oriented leaders and hired people who shared its purpose. Mahatma Gandhi, who knew the power of establishing and running a purpose-oriented organization, said: “A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.” No wonder why he altered the course of history.

Purpose-oriented employees, fulfilled at work
It is not just the top leader (s) gets fulfilled from forming and running a purpose-oriented organization. Other leaders and team members who joined the organization since they shared its purpose (mission/cause) are purpose-conscious. They too find fulfillment from their work and participation.

Let me share with you some statistics:
A 2015 research by Imperative disclosed that purpose-oriented employees are more likely to have a 20% longer expected tenure, and 65 % more likely to experience a high level of fulfillment in their work.

Deloitte’s 2014 survey “Found that focusing on purpose rather than profits builds business confidence and drives investment.” The same survey conducted in 2013 found out that “91% of respondents (executives and employees) who said their company had a strong sense of purpose also said their company had a history of strong financial performance.”

Organizations that articulated their purpose well and streamlined everything along their purpose succeeded more than those which failed to do so. A purpose-oriented organization has strong competitive advantages. It attracts loyal customers and fans who share its purpose. That is why Simon Sinek- the author of ‘Start With Why’, said: “People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it.”

Shared the risks, shifts, and sacrifices I paid in pursuit of my purpose (excerpt)

Making the shift took me more than I anticipated
Ken was curious to know my experience. With a friendly and playful manner, Ken asked: “Do you mind to share with me your story of migration?” I briefly narrated my story. “My journey began in the early 90’s back home in Ethiopia. Though I didn’t know the word purpose back then, I was convinced that my assignment in life is empowering others. Without wasting any time, I quickly began taking leadership initiatives, first a youth leader, and then became the president of the largest university students’ union. I continued to take leadership initiatives, which I thought aligned with my purpose. I made so many personality changes. I also made many shifts including my professions in order to lead a purpose-oriented lifestyle.”

I paused to see if Ken had any questions and whether what I was saying made sense to him. It looked like he was immersed in my story. I then acknowledged, “Though I had a sense of what my purpose look likes, discovering my unique purpose took me years. Back then, I didn’t know anyone close to me who was on his/her purpose. For that matter, I never heard anyone talking about it. I couldn’t find books on the subject. If I knew what I know now, it wouldn’t have taken me so long. However, more than the discovery, making the shifts in the pursuit of my purpose required lots of efforts, energy, risk-taking, and sacrifices. It also took me more time than what I anticipated initially.”

I have the scars as proof…
Ken asked some follow up questions. He was interested in the prices I paid and what I felt while I was passing through those uncertain moments. He was also wondering whether I was sure I’d make the shifts successfully and arrive where I had wanted to be and able to pursue my purpose beforehand.

He observed: “AZ, it doesn’t seem you passed through these troubles to discover and pursue your purpose.” It was visible on his face. He felt sorry for me, but at the same time, it gave him more reasons to listen to me. He realized that I wasn’t talking theoretically or from what I learned from reading. I walked the talk, and I have the scars to proof it.

Finally, Ken remarked, “I didn’t know you’ve paid these sacrifices in search of your purpose. You changed professions, left promising jobs, trimmed unproductive relationships, and refrained from taking luring leadership opportunities in order to pursue your purpose. It takes courage and endurance. My hat is off to you.”

He then pointed out, “I see now that discovering our purpose and making the shift from where we’re now to where we belong- our dream place, requires a considerable amount of effort and time but worth doing.” Ken then asked me to briefly elaborate what I mean by purpose-oriented:

  1. Life
  2. Relationships
  3. Organization (s)
  4. Leadership

I was glad to explain these concepts to Ken. I defined the terms and gave him some examples. Let me quickly recap what I shared with Ken…

My conversation with Ken about purpose-oriented lifestyle (excerpt)

Ken vowed to discover his WHY
…The full benefits of purpose impressed Ken. He vowed to answer the question of “Why” for both his life and business. Though I was glad that we had come a long way, I decided to take our conversation to the next level. I emphasized that we cannot attain purpose-oriented greatness from just discovering and pursuing our purpose unless we lead a purpose-oriented lifestyle.

Making purpose the fulcrum
Ken jumped in. “I fully understand your definition of purpose and began appreciating its benefits. Nonetheless, you keep on saying purpose-oriented lifestyle. Do you mind elaborating?” “Sorry.” I apologized for not defining the term before I used it. I then explained, “Purpose-oriented lifestyle is attained when everything we do is aligned with our purpose. When our life, relationships, organization (s), and leadership are brought in line with our purpose. When our purpose becomes the fulcrum.”

Purpose-oriented are supper purpose conscious
“How can I tell when I become purpose-oriented?” Ken inquired. “Purpose-oriented people use their purpose as a filter. Before they allow anything into their life/organization, or before they jump into anything worthwhile, they make sure that it aligns with their purpose. They use their purpose/mission as a measuring stick. Simply put, purpose-oriented people are super purpose conscious. When you become sensitive and use your purpose as a decisive factor before involving in any major task, then, you can tell that you began a purpose-oriented lifestyle.”

Ken immediately understood what I was trying to communicate. He recapped, “If I understand you correctly, everything someone does must be in line with his purpose in life to become a purpose-oriented person.” “Correct,” I agreed…

A few discovered their purpose early in life
“By the way,” I continued, “Only a few people found out their unique purpose at the early stage of their life. These individuals aligned everything they did with their purpose. They:

  • Attended a school (s) that equipped them to pursue their purpose,
  • Grabbed jobs and opportunities that provided them some opportunities in the pursuit of their purpose,
  • Formed relationships and alliances with people who shared their cause,
  • Established businesses and organizations that contributed to pursue and fulfill their purpose, and
  • Took leadership initiatives based on their purpose and passion.”

“These individuals must be lucky. I never met anyone like that in my life. It’s almost impossible to have such a clean start.” Ken concluded. I agreed with him that very few began this rewarding journey with a clean start. I conceded, “Unfortunately, the majority of us need to make lots of shifts before we begin leading a purpose-oriented lifestyle.”

Few are leading a purpose-oriented life
I further noted, “Yes, it is hard to lead a purpose-oriented lifestyle. However, once someone discovers his purpose, it becomes natural for that person to trim those things in his life that don’t add value to the accomplishment of his purpose. Not only that, he actively and proactively looks for relationships and opportunities that align with his purpose. He only takes leadership initiatives that contribute, directly or indirectly, toward the fulfillment of his purpose.”

Ken interjected, “Still these are minorities.” I admitted that the overwhelming majority is far away from leading this kind of a lifestyle. “For many- myself included, it takes years, and in some cases decades. But, it’s doable. I encourage you to focus on yourself, and what you can do. Begin small scale. Start from limiting what you add to your life and business. For those things that have already got into your space, trimming can wait. Hold on your scissors for now.” Ken laughed loudly. And, I joined him…

The four grand truth about purpose (Excerpt)

Here are the four grand truths concerning purpose that justify why we should seek purpose-oriented greatness:

  1. Everything in this finely-tuned universe has a unique purpose
  2. When a thing fails to serve its purpose, it loses its significance
  3. When a thing gets misaligned from its purpose, it performs poorly
  4. True greatness comes from discovering and pursuing one’s unique purpose
  1. Every creation has a unique purpose

The universe is a purposeful one. Everything in this universe was created for a specific reason. That was why Sir John Templeton asked cynically, Would it not be strange if a universe without purpose accidentally created humans who are so obsessed with purpose?” There is nothing in this finely tuned universe that exists without a definite purpose.

Each individual is created with a unique purpose to manifest greatness. However, this greatness is tied with his unique purpose. One’s true greatness, therefore, should begin by admitting this fact and taking responsibility to discover and pursue his unique purpose.

Filipino nationalist and polymath Jose Rizal took responsibility when he said, “As God has not made anything useless in this world, as all beings fulfill obligations or a role in the sublime drama of Creation, I cannot exempt from this duty.” He believed, “And small though it be, I too have a mission to fill, as for example: alleviating the sufferings of my fellowmen.” You too should take responsibility. What so ever small you may think your reason for existence, you have a unique place in the universe…

What I found out in my conversations concerning purpose (excerpt)

Authentic purpose is subjective
I’ve helped individuals and organizations to discover (refine) their purpose, and their organization’s mission. I said: I’ve ‘helped’. This is because an authentic purpose is subjective. You’re the only one who knows yours and your organization’s purpose.

My job as a coach and consultant has been asking the right questions to facilitate the discovery. However, I found out quickly that clarifying what purpose is and what it’s not from the onset has always been important. It has always been helpful when I’m on the same page with my clients concerning the definition of purpose/mission from the start.

What I found out in my conversations…
I’ve also made informal one-on-one conversations with friends and colleagues mainly out of curiosity. Whenever I ask people, ‘What is your purpose?’, I get different answers. Many don’t differentiate their generic assignment in life and their day job from the reason for existence. Still, others don’t want to answer the question. They would rather change the subject to something else.

Nonetheless, I met a few who knew and articulated their purpose very well. They didn’t think twice. Exuding palpable energy, they talked about it with passion. These individuals understood what purpose means, and many of them discovered their unique purpose. Some of them went in detail to describe it. These individuals found their reason for existence and were ready to die for it.

For your information, I found out that most of the individuals from the last group, went the extra mile and used the opportunity to find out my purpose in life, and whether we shared the same cause. No wonder. Since these individuals lead purpose-oriented relationships, they take every opportunity to build a relationship based on a common cause. We’ll talk more on this later.

The key thing to mention at this point is that these individuals understood that their personal fulfillment is tied with the fulfillment of others. They believed that they’re not islands. They knew that they couldn’t achieve personal fulfillment without contributing toward the realization of others’ fulfillment.

How do I react when asked about my purpose?
Of course, I also met some individuals who asked me this the same question. As you can imagine, whenever people give me the opportunity and honor to talk about my purpose in life, I talk about it forever, if they allow me. My mood changes. If I was sitting, I sit comfortably. If I was standing, I plant myself and begin to talk about it as if I’m talking to thousands of people.

Those who know their purpose are brave souls
I don’t know about you. Individuals who know their purpose attract me for varies reasons. I consider such individuals brave souls. Spending time with such individuals encourages and motivates me a lot. I also learn some lessons from their purpose-oriented journey which I can apply in my own life and organizations.

Conversation with Ken…
Let me share with you one of my conversations in detail. I met Ken (not his real name) through one of my business partners, let’s call him Pete. They met a couple of weeks ago at a networking event. Since he met Ken, Pete kept talking about him a lot and brought his name in our conversations multiple times.

Finally, Pete suggested that we should meet. He told me, “I’m sure, you will like him the moment you meet him.” And, he didn’t waste any time. He invited both of us to attend one of his family gatherings…

Billie Jean King- from Level 4 to the 3rd level of greatness (excerpt)

…I’m glad to report to you that some of the great ones at Level 4 upgraded themselves to the third level of greatness by discovering a cause. Their beauty or talent and hard work handed them a platform. They used it as a launching pad to keep climbing the greatness ladder.

A great example is Billie Jean King. She realized greatness at Level 4 and became famous as the world No. 1 professional tennis player winning 39 Grand Slam titles. Once she retired from the sport, she found a cause: equality and social justice. She achieved purpose-oriented greatness. As a result of her commitment to her cause, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 from former President Barack Obama.

How many sports champions received the highest civilian medal from the highest office in the world? King knew that she had greatness well beyond the sports field. She discovered a cause that defined her and mattered to who she was. She was passionate and committed to the cause. That was why she succeeded at level three based on a worthy purpose.

Go from Level 4 to the next higher greatness

You may or may not made it to the first two lower levels of greatness. Regardless of wherever you may be right now, you have a chance to go to the next level- Level 3 greatness. The latter is a fulfilling greatness. This journey should begin by first discovering your unique purpose…

Talent and hard work alone aren’t enough- Michael Jordan vs. Mike Tyson (Excerpt)

Michael Jordan vs. Mike Tyson

For instance, Michael Jordan achieved greatness based on his exceptional gifts, a well-built body for basketball coupled with his disciplined work ethic. However, he didn’t lose it when he retired from playing basketball. He remained at the forth level greatness by working hard as an entrepreneur.

On the other hand, Mike Tyson reached Diligence-based greatness as an iron fist heavyweight-boxing champion. But, he couldn’t stay at this level of greatness. Due to mismanagement and lack of foresight, he struggled financially and eventually went bankrupted. Hopefully, Mike won’t read this story. Otherwise, if he catches me one day, he might punch me in the face and knock me out.

Like Mike, there have been many talented and hard working successful individuals who accomplished this level of greatness. Sadly, they neither stayed there for an extended period nor moved to the next level of greatness by finding a worthy cause. Greatness at level 4 fades with age. It’s seasonal. But, very few catch this reality while it mattered.

Talent/hard work can’t lead to a lasting greatness

Look around you. Many get up every morning to succeed using their natural talent and gifts alone. Sadly, very few with exceptional talent and gifting alone could excel and become successful in their field. The vast majority of talented and gifted individuals toil without success.

Numerous hardworking individuals bet on their willpower. They think that with their talent, gifts, and experience if they just work a little harder than everyone else, they could outsmart and outshine others and attain greatness. However, we have seen it again and again, a fraction of hard-working people secured a lasting greatness.

Talent, gifts, and hard work aren’t irrelevant

A quick disclaimer. I’m not saying that talent, gifts, and hard-work are irrelevant. What I’m saying is that greatness that comes by tapping into your gifts, talent, and hard-work alone isn’t fulfilling. I’m suggesting for you to discover your reason for existence and pursue it until it’s fulfilled. That is the source of your greatness. It’s your comparative and competitive advantage. It distinguishes you. At the end of the day, it allows you to claim your birthright of greatness…

A billionaire wanting talent based greatness (Excerpt)

…Among those who used the platform to transit to the next level greatness, Kirsty Bertarelli is a good example. She won the 1988 Miss United Kingdom contest. That launched her into fame and attaining Level 5 greatness through her beauty. Then, she got lucky again and married a billionaire, Ernesto Bertarelli. She was still within the same level of greatness.

However, now, she is seeking to achieve the fourth level of greatness. She said, So many people would just go off on their yacht and spend their life drinking champagne, but not me. You should grasp life. Singing has been inside me my whole life and I can’t not do it. She is looking for greatness based on her talent. The greatness she achieved through her beauty and marrying a rich man wasn’t enough and fulfilling to her…

Myths, Excuses, and Sabotages that prevent the majority from becoming great (Excerpt)

…If greatness is the birthright of all, why then is the overwhelming majority unable to claim its right? These precious people may be like me. I used to think that greatness is an exclusive club- only for a few lucky individuals. Nonetheless, my study uncovered that those great ones before us were like us- ordinary, before they ventured out to unchain their greatness within. They found the secret- the pattern that leads to greatness, and followed it faithfully.

The fact that there is a pattern tells us a couple of things about greatness. Greatness is:

  • Predictable,
  • Repeatable, and
  • Most importantly, achievable by anyone who follows the pattern the great ones followed.

Thus, the answer to ‘Can anyone become great?’ is Yes. Then, one may ask a follow-up question, ‘Why then are the vast majority unable to attain greatness?’ That is a legitimate question. There are:

  • Myths,
  • Excuses, and
  • Sabotages that prevent the vast majority from claiming their birthright of greatness.

There are myths that prevent the vast majority from seeking its birthright of greatness. Many use lame excuses to discount themselves before they even try. There are also many sabotages that hinder those who began this rewarding journey to quit before they unleash their greatness to the fullest. Anyone who could be able to demystify these myths, disown their excuses, and overcome the sabotages is a candidate to unchain his/her greatness and become one of the great world changers…
